SKILLS:
Wood Engraving / Watercolour painting / Pen & Ink Drawing / Pencil Drawing / Acrylic Painting / Calligraphy
INSPIRATION:
Landscape; Nature; Trees; Patterns; Lines; Contrasts; Colours; People; Travelling
I am fascinated by the patterns that are all around us; these contrasts & connections form the basis of my work.
Initially, I may make a quick or a more concentrated sketch, which often becomes a more accented watercolour. Ultimately, this can be the basis for a wood engraving, using the darks & lights with the blending of textures, shapes & colours to engrave my own scene on endgrain woodblock…
INFLUENCES:
At Secondary school, I was often to be found in the Art Department when not in lessons. There I was introduced to Lino-cutting by Peggy Angus.
After ‘A’ Levels, I was accepted for the Art Foundation course at Harrow College of Art & Design. There, I was taught an intense system of measured drawing from life by Ken Howard, which I’ve been grateful for ever since.
I went on to Maidstone College of Art for the Fine Art degree course for 1 year, then, needing to be in London, I changed to St Martins College of Art. There I was introduced to Wood Engraving by John O’Connor.
My own Art has taken a ‘back seat’ for many years due to marriage & raising four children, & later working as a Junior school teaching assistant with an emphasis on Art.
During these years, I took up scenery painting with a local amateur operatic society, which was a welcome skill to have when working in a Junior school.
I retired from school work and in 2021 moved to Broadstairs, where I am keen to make my artistic marks once more in earnest. I am grateful to have been accepted to EKAS, where I hope to join in with some of the many future events and outings.
